New Delhi: Climate Change and global warming have disrupted the environment of this planet and threatened the existence of numerous species, including human beings. A major reason for climate change is the increasing pollution level in the environment, which is why, more and more countries are looking to shift to renewable energy than non-renewable energy. Unlike non-renewable energy sources like fossil fuels which can end one day and would leave a greater carbon footprint, renewable energy sources, as the name suggests, are in unlimited supply and also bring down the pollution level in the environment by a big margin. One of them is solar energy, with more nations using it in today’s age.

The solar farm in Australia and its importance

The Australian government, on August 22, 2024, approved a plan which aims to create a massive solar and battery farm. According to reports, it is going to be the ‘largest solar precinct in the world,’ and it will reportedly export energy to Singapore.

In an era where environmentalists are pushing for global renewable energy initiatives, this has come as a huge news, one which has been welcomed by everyone. The Australian government announced environmental approvals for SunCable’s US$24 billion project in the remote north which, according to the estimates, would power three million homes. Among many other things, the project will have numerous panels, batteries and, a cable linking Australia with Singapore. Tech billionaire and green activist Mike Cannon-Brookes is backing this project.

According to Tanya Plibersek, the Environment Minister of Australia, the project will result in the largest solar precinct in the world. The project, once completed, can potentially make Australia a leader power in green energy and as per estimates, it will begin energy production by 2030. As per reports, the facility will cover 29,650 acres of land and will generate four gigawatts of energy every hour for domestic consumption. There will be an extra two gigawatts that would export energy to Singapore via undersea cable which would meet about 15 per cent of the energy needs of the latter. Also, batteries can store about 40 gigawatts of power.

Amanda McKenzie, the chief executive of the Climate Council stated that the new solar hub will make Australia a powerhouse in clean energy and also added that such projects are important in delivering affordable energy and reducing pollution levels. Notably, Australia is rapidly shifting towards renewable energy. Infact, in 2022, around 32 per cent of the total electricity in Australia came from renewable energy resources, while coal contributed 47 per cent.
