Mangled remains of the Nashik-bound state transport bus PUNE: A state land measurement officer died, and her husband and 14 others suffered injuries, after a Nashik-bound MSRTC bus hit a Metro rail pillar in Bopodi before veering off to the wrong side of the Pune-Mumbai highway to hit an SUV and a motorcycle around 10.30am on Sunday.
Police have identified the deceased as Manisha Bhosale (40) of Sangli. She was travelling in the SUV with her husband, Vijaysinh, also an officer in the same state department, and her brother was driving the vehicle.
“Apart from Vijaysinh and his brother-in-law, a motorcyclist and 12 passengers on board the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus were among those injured,” a police officer said.
The injuries to the bus passengers were minor in nature. Vijaysinh, his brother-in-law and the bike rider have been admitted to the Sassoon General Hospital.
Senior inspector Satish Jagdale of Khadki police told TOI, “We have detained the bus driver and have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against him. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) and MSRTC officials have been told to inspect the bus.”
The bus had left MSRTC’s Wakdewadi bus depot for Nashik via Bhosari and Narayangaon. “The bus crossed the Khadki railway station and was proceeding towards Bhosari when the driver lost control over the wheel after applying sudden brakes. The bus hit a Pune Metro rail pillar and then went to the other side of the highway. There it collided head on with the SUV coming from Bhosari to Pune and then hit a motorcycle,” the officer said.
Pramod Nehul, MSRTC’s Pune divisional controller, said, “A departmental inquiry has been ordered against the bus driver. The bus, belonging to the Narayangaon depot, was going to Nashik and was carrying 43 passengers at the time of the accident. Preliminary inquiry indicated that the bus, which was 10 years old, had no technical issues.”
Nehul said, “The bus driver lost control of the vehicle, which led to the accident. It can be said to be a human error, but the driver was fine and not under the influence of alcohol.”
Another MSRTC official said the RTO would check the bus and submit a report.
Senior police inspector Jagdale said, “Bhosale was assigned Purandar taluka after her recent transfer from Sangli to Pune district. She and her husband were staying with her brother in Chikhali. They were about to move to a rented apartment in Hadapsar. They were going to Hadapsar to check the apartment.”
Local residents and the Khadki police reached the spot after the accident, opened the door of the damaged SUV, and moved the occupants to the Sassoon General Hospital.
The bus passengers were given preliminary treatment at a nearby hospital.
