Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira is on a visit to India. During his visit, India may raise the plight of hundreds of men and women, many of them Indian, who are stranded at an airport in Sau Paulo, Brazil. The hundreds of stranded people are suspected to be undocumented immigrants.

Why is Vieira in India?

The Brazilian Foreign Minister is in India to hold the ninth India-Brazil Joint Commission meeting with the Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar — scheduled for August 27.

Vieira and Jaishankar, as per a press briefing on the Indian External Affairs Ministry website, will also discuss the agenda for the G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19.

“With Brazil holding the G20 Presidency this year, the Ministers will also discuss how the two countries as Troika can take forth key G20 outcomes from the Indian Presidency last year,” added the statement.

Stranded in Brazil

As per a Hindu report, the topic of the 660 stranded people — including 100 Indians waiting to enter Brazil, and the nation’s new crackdown on illegal immigration routes is not on the agenda during the Brazilian foreign minister’s visit. However, it is expected to be raised.

Reuters reports that 666 migrants without visas are stuck in limbo at Sao Paulo’s international airport. Stranded for weeks in alarming conditions, as per Public Defender’s office, they have been sleeping on the floor as they wait to enter Brazil.

Held in restricted areas, these migrants have no access to showers, and their movements are limited, which makes it difficult for them to obtain food and water. Furthermore, children have been forced to endure the cold winter without blankets, alleged an official from the Public Defender’s office.

The office found that the migrants’ human rights are in violation with their deteriorating health.

Brazil’s crackdown on immigrants

The nation’s public security ministry told Reuters that Brazil has seen a boom in foreign travellers, particularly from Asia, who land in the country for a supposed layover en route to North America. To enter Brazil, they allegedly claim refugee status, alleging persecution and threats in their home country.

Now, Brazil has mandated that passengers arriving in São Paulo without a visa will not be allowed to stay in the country.
