How did Tirupati temple laddus get adulterated with animal fat? – Firstpost

2

It’s been a rough week for India and Indians. We saw a controversy break out over adulterated laddus, a new chief minister being crowned in Delhi and questions being asked about India’s culture of overworking.

India’s stern reaction to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s remarks on the conditions of Muslims in the country and the first Jammu-Kashmir elections in a decade also made big news in the week gone by.

The worry of mpox spreading in India also made headlines in the country after Bengaluru airport was put on high alert.

If you missed all of this and more, and want a quick recap, continue scrolling down to read our weekly recap.

1) Perhaps, the biggest story coming from India this week was the resignation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi chief minister. After stepping out of Tihar jail, he announced his intention to step down last Sunday and called for early elections, saying that this would be his ‘agnipariksha’.

Two days after making the announcement, on Tuesday (September 17), the AAP announced that
Atishi would be the next Delhi CM. While AAP and Atishi fans celebrated the news, Swati Maliwal, a Rajya Sabha MP, and the BJP criticised the AAP’s choice, claiming that the 43-year-old’s family had fought a battle to stop convicted terrorist Afzal Guru’s hanging.

Is there any truth behind this claim? We get you the truth
here.

2) The week gone by also saw a huge
political row breaking out over the famous Tirupati Temple laddus, which are given to devotees as prasad (offering). Controversy erupted when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the ghee, the main ingredient in preparing the laddus, contained animal fat. He alleged that the adulteration had taken place under the rule of his predecessor, YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Adding fuel to the fire was a report made public by the TDP that alleged that the temple’s famed laddus contained beef tallow, lard and fish oil. In our explainer, we take a closer look at where the
‘adulterated’ ghee came from.

3) On July 20, 26-year-old Anna Sebastian Perayil, a chartered accountant who worked with S R Batliboi, a member firm of Ernst & Young (EY) Global, at Yerawada in Pune died after undergoing treatment at a city hospital. The tragedy grabbed eyeballs earlier this week when her mother, Anita Augustine, wrote a letter to EY’s India head, highlighting how her daughter experienced extreme work pressure, which affected her health and ultimately led to her death. She also highlighted the “new environment” of the company, which could prove detrimental to the health of other employees in the future.

Following the letter going viral, many other
employees across the country have revealed just how burnt out they are at their jobs, laying bare the country’s overwork culture. But how has ‘work is worship’ turned into ‘worked to death’ in India? Our
explainer has it all.

4) India shares a close relationship with Iran that dates back to ancient times. However, those ties came under strain this week when Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on the occasion of the Prophet’s birthday, declared that to be a “true Muslim one cannot ignore the suffering of the Muslims in Gaza, Myanmar and India”.

The remark prompted the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to put out a statement, calling the Iranian leader’s remarks ‘misinformed’. What exactly happened? How did things unfold?
Here’s what you need to know.

5) September 18 was a momentous day for India, especially Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Territory held the first phase of its three-phase elections in a decade. The last polls conducted there were in 2014 following which Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP and the BJP joined hands to form a government. The alliance collapsed in 2018 when the saffron party withdrew support over differences. Read our
report on it.

6) The country is on edge as mpox infections continue to rise across the world. In an effort to keep the virus at bay,
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has stepped up vigilance, which, in turn, will impact international travellers. What steps have the authorities taken?
