In a groundbreaking move for Nigeria’s agricultural sector, the Supply Chain Research and Innovation Hub (SCRIH) has partnered with the University of Abuja to launch the nation’s first National Agricultural Reference Laboratory. This collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between both institutions.

The laboratory, set to be housed within the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Abuja, will serve as a hub for agricultural research, testing, and development. Its key objectives include enhancing food safety and quality, supporting research and development, providing training for students and professionals, and contributing to policy development through critical agricultural data.

Founder of SCRIH, Adebayo Adeleke, emphasised that the partnership with the University of Abuja was a strategic choice aimed at leveraging the academic resources of the institution. “Universities are centres of learning, innovation, and research, so it is only right that a facility focusing on innovation is housed here,” Adeleke said during the signing ceremony.

Prof. Akeem Oyerinde, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Abuja, also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling Nigeria’s agricultural productivity and food safety issues. He stressed that the lab would play a vital role in bringing together experts across different fields to develop comprehensive solutions, while also nurturing the next generation of agricultural scientists.

The establishment of the National Agricultural Reference Laboratory marks a significant step towards addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges. It aligns with both national and international goals to eradicate hunger and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
