New Delhi: A tender for a 6.3 km long elevated road in Thane has been announced by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This elevated road will connect Anand Nagar and Saket on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), according to a report by Hindustan Times.

The main purpose of this venture is to ease traffic congestion on the city’s major roads.

“The proposed road, costing Rs 1,699 crore, is expected to be completed in four years and will significantly smoothen traffic flow in the city,” said an MMRDA official.

Thane, the home turf of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, is poised for substantial infrastructure growth in the coming years, with several major projects either ongoing, stalled, or proposed. The district has seen numerous infrastructure initiatives. This new elevated road is part of Shinde’s push for infrastructure development, promising a significant impact on the daily lives of Thane’s residents.

The Anand Nagar-Saket elevated road, approved in 2023, will have six lanes to improve traffic flow from Samruddhi Mahamarg to the Mumbai-Nashik highway. Permissions were obtained by the Thane Municipal Corporation, and the MMRDA is in charge of construction, marking this road as a key segment of Thane’s inaugural coastal highway project.

Furthermore, the MMRDA is developing an additional elevated road connecting Ghatkopar and Thane along the Eastern Express Highway, which will provide a link to the Eastern Freeway. A notable undertaking is the construction of the second coastal road stretching from Gaimukh to Balkum. The MMRDA also intends to pave portions of Ghodbunder Road, extending from Kapurbawdi to Gaimukh, at an estimated cost of Rs 395 crore.

At the latest MMRDA meeting, the executive committee sanctioned a tunnel from Gaimukh to Fountain Hotel to link Thane district with Palghar district, and an elevated road from Fountain Hotel to Bhayander. The MMRDA is seeking consultants to design these projects and secure environmental clearances. These projects are slated for completion within five and a half years.

With traffic in Thane expected to rise substantially, these infrastructure developments are essential. The operational Vadhavan port will attract more business travel, increasing traffic volumes. The Mumbai Vadodara Expressway will reroute heavy traffic, and the Thane Borivali Twin Tunnel along with the Mulund Goregaon Tunnel will enhance East-West connectivity, thereby reducing the overall traffic congestion in Thane.
