Georgian Agriculture Minister highlights development of viticulture, winemaking as Ministry’s “main priority

Georgian Agriculture Minister Otar Shamugia said promoting the development of viticulture and winemaking in the country was one of the “main priorities” of the Ministry while visiting a wine cellar in the village of Gveso in western Georgia’s Tsageri Municipality. 

Shamugia, along with Papuna Margvelidze, the State Representative in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, inspected the family wine cellar, built and equipped with modern standards within the state programme Promotion of Entrepreneurial Activity in Mountainous Regions implemented by the Rural Development Agency, the Ministry said on Sunday. 

“We carry out many projects supporting winegrowers and winemakers. Lechkhumi is one of the most distinctive regions in winemaking and viniculture. This year, grape harvesting was successful here too, and over 1000 tonnes of grapes were processed. The project gives an opportunity to winegrowers in Racha [-Lechkhumi] and Kvemo Svaneti [region in northwestern Georgia] to create wineries, process their grapes themselves and get more income by selling the produced wine”, Shamugia noted.

The Ministry added contracts had been signed with 59 beneficiaries within the state programme implemented by the Rural Development Agency, with the total investment constituting ₾ 8.8 million ($ 3.2mln), from which the Agency’s co-financing amounted to more than ₾4.5million ($1.65mln).
