New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his best wishes to all the Indian athletes participating at the Paris Olympics 2024 just hour ahead of the opening ceremony at the River Seine on Friday.

The 33rd edition of the Summer Games will officially start on Saturday after the completion of the traditional opening ceremony. Although disciplines such as handball, soccer and archery have already been in action before the opening ceremony, the Paris Games will start in a full-fledge manner from Saturday (July 27) onwards.

The six-member Indian archers were the first to get into the act on Thursday after both men’s and women’s teams secured quarterfinal berths in the team events. The rest of the Indian athletes will be seen in action only after the official opening ceremony.

India has send its second largest contingent of 117 athletes and 140 support staff members at the Paris Olympics 2024, where 16 sports will be in focus out of the total 32 sports listed this edition. PM Narendra Modi wished all the athletes to bring glory to the nation.

“As the Paris #Olympics commences, my best wishes to the Indian contingent. Every athlete is India’s pride. May they all shine and embody the true spirit of sportsmanship, inspiring us with their exceptional performances. #Paris2024,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle.

Can India better their performance of Tokyo Olympics this time?

India recorded its best performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics three years ago despite the Covid-19 restrictions in place. The Indian contingent returned with seven medals, including a gold, two silver, and three bronze medals, overhauling the record of six medals set at the 2012 London Olympics.

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra etched his name in record books after he became the first Indian track and field athlete to win a medal at the Olympics. His gold was only the second individual gold medal for India after Abhinav Bindra’s gold in shooting at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
