Since Summit’s project was introduced in 2021, the ethanol industry has stood at a crossroads waiting for resolution. Projects like Summit Carbon Solutions are essential to ensuring the long-term viability of the ethanol industry in Iowa, by allowing partner plants to produce a more sustainable fuel. The marketplace for low-carbon fuel is getting stronger and stronger, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

While Iowa farmers wait for regulatory approval on Summit’s project, Brazil has been exporting ethanol into the U.S. to meet domestic SAF demand. This development, while promising for the SAF market, underscores the urgency for all U.S. ethanol producers to gain access to carbon capture technology.

Siouxland has implemented several projects to lower our carbon score. Summit’s project will make plants likes ours competitive with the Brazilian importers. This decision by the IUC is the first step to ensure strong corn markets, high land values for farmers and a strong economy for many other Iowans who rely on the success of agriculture markets.

We thank the Iowa Utilities Commission for their diligent review of feedback from landowners and other stakeholders.

As we continue to embrace innovation and adapt to growing markets such as sustainable aviation fuel, our hope is that the Iowa Utilities Commission will continue to support carbon capture projects like Summit to help deliver a strong and growing agricultural economy for all Iowans.
