Today marks the observance of Akshay Urja Day, also known as Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of renewable energy and efficient energy use in India.

This annual campaign, initiated by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in 2004, highlights the environmental and economic benefits of renewable energy and honours the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Since its inception, Akshay Urja Day has played a key role in educating the public about the advantages of adopting renewable energy solutions, such as solar, wind, and biomass. This day is also celebrated to encourage individuals, businesses, and communities all over the nation to adopt environmentally friendly habits in their everyday lives, to help conserve non-renewable resources, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and support the world’s efforts to slow down global warming.

The Government of India has taken several steps and initiatives to promote and accelerate renewable energy capacity in the country to realise the target of 500 GW non-fossil power capacity by 2030. At present, most of the utility-scale renewable energy projects in the country are being set up by private-sector developers. However, MNRE has been implementing Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), Development of Solar Parks and Ultra-Mega Solar Power Projects, and PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana schemes under which incentive as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) is provided to the State Implementing Agencies (SIAs) / DISCOMS / Local Bodies, for implementation of the respective schemes.

The impact of these efforts is evident in the notable growth in renewable energy generation in India. As per Central Electricity Authority (CEA) statistics, India’s overall renewable energy generation grew from 193. 50 Billion Units (BU) in 2013-14 to 359. 89 BU in 2023-24, an increase of 86 percent. So far this fiscal year 2024-25 (up to May 31) India has already produced 61.84 BU of renewable energy.

Akshay Urja Day is the day India puts these developments on display and celebrates the progress it has made in the field of renewable energy. It also creates a forum to involve different interested parties, from government agencies to private developers to the public at large, in a national discourse on the future of renewable energy.

Commenting on the occasion, Gagan Chanana, CEO and Joint Managing Director of Jakson DEB, said, “On Akshay Urja Divas, we honour the incredible strides made by the renewable energy industry in promoting sustainable growth and environmental stewardship. The deployment of our CPCB IV gensets exemplifies Jakson Group’s dedication to reducing emissions while ensuring high operational efficiency across sectors.”

“Our contributions to the ISTS (Inter-State Transmission System), solar microgrids, and rooftop solar initiatives are revolutionizing the energy landscape, providing communities with greater access to clean, reliable energy. This day is a powerful reminder of the collective efforts of individuals, organizations, and communities in driving the transition to a greener, more resilient future. Together, we are shaping a nation that is both energy-independent and environmentally conscious,” added Chanana.

The transition to renewable energy is not only a choice it is a necessity. So on this day, the government joins the communities and businesses in reaffirming its pledge to a greener, more sustainable India.
