TIFTON, Ga. – ABAC celebrates Destination Ag Day, highlighting agricultural heritage and education.

Families in Tifton enjoyed a fun and educational experience at ABAC’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture (GMA) over the weekend for Destination Ag Day.

“Destination Ag Day is an opportunity for us here at the museum at ABAC’s Museum of Agriculture to showcase our Destination Ag program, which is an ag literacy program for children in Pre-K through fifth grade. We’ve been running that program with a partnership with the Harley Langdale Jr. Foundation out of Valdosta. This will be our eighth year offering that program. But, it’s a free program for them. They come to visit with us and we teach them about agriculture and natural resources and really the sources of their food, fiber and shelter,” said Garrett Boone, director of ABAC’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture.

Participants enjoyed a variety of fun activities, including crafts, games, hands-on learning experiences, and opportunities to interact with barn animals and reptiles.

“But, basically educating the public on agriculture and natural resources and a great opportunity to do that in a fun way. And, we have some great partners that are here from the Farm Bureau, from the Cattlemen’s Association, Pecan Growers Association and ABAC clubs as well. We all do the same thing. We’re all in the business of education,” said Boone.

Garrett Boone, director of ABAC’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture, emphasizes why it is important for people to learn about agriculture as one of our biggest resources.

“It’s an opportunity for them to see the past of agriculture in the historic village here at the museum and then the present and the future of agriculture here at Destination Ag. Without the producer, without the farmer, without our natural resources, we wouldn’t we wouldn’t be here. And, it’s vitally important to educate the consumer. And, that’s why we started the Destination Ag program here at the museum to take that information and try to eliminate that disconnect between the consumer and the producer,” said Boone.

The GMA will be hosting the next Destination Ag Day next year.
