Agriculture Minister Highlights Progress and Future Investments in Hinterland Food Production – NCN Guyana

The Government of Guyana is making significant strides in enhancing agricultural production in hinterland regions, with further investments planned to improve livelihoods in these areas.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha outlined these developments during his address to Indigenous leaders at the National Toshaos’ Council Conference.

Minister Mustapha emphasized the ongoing projects aimed at boosting food production in communities like Matarkai and Moruca.

He noted that the Ministry of Agriculture is working closely with regional authorities on land-clearing efforts and river maintenance, particularly in the Moruca River, to support sustainable farming practices.

The minister also revealed plans to expand honey production through specialized training programs, with the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) partnering with Cuban specialists to implement large-scale honey production across Regions 1, 7, 8, and 9.

In addition to honey production, the ministry will focus on aquaculture by installing 50 marine cages in select hinterland communities.

Investments will also be made in livestock development, contributing to the broader goal of increasing food security and economic opportunities in these regions.
