Following heavy rain and severe waterlogging in Delhi, Education Minister Atishi announced the closure of all schools on Thursday. She informed the public on X (formerly Twitter) that both government and private schools will be closed on August 1st.

New Delhi: Following heavy rain that inundated the city yesterday evening, inviting a red alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi’s Education Minister Atishi announced the closure of all schools on Thursday. This decision comes after severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions that hit the capital on Wednesday evening. Minister Atishi took to X (formerly Twitter) to inform the public: “In light of the very heavy rainfall this evening and the forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow, all schools, both government and private, will remain closed on August 1st.”

Officers ordered to remain vigilant

Additionally, after the heavy rainfalls yesterday evening, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has directed officials to stay vigilant. “Apart from ensuring minimum inconvenience to people in general, they are advised to specifically address issues at sites prone to waterlogging, including coaching centres,” Saxena posted on X.

MCD on high alert; Available 24/7: Shelly Oberoi

It is also worth mentioning, that Delhi Mayor on X (formerly Twitter) has announced that in response to recent weather conditions, the MCD Commissioner and all officials have been instructed to operate on a 24/7 basis. Shifts will be distributed to ensure continuous monitoring and immediate action to address any instances of water-logging.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’, the highest alert level, advising residents to stay indoors, secure their homes, and avoid unnecessary travel. The National Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin also identified Delhi as an “area of concern.” The adverse weather led to the diversion of at least ten flights scheduled to land at Delhi’s airport, with eight rerouted to Jaipur and two to Lucknow. Airlines have warned passengers about potential further disruptions.

Wednesday’s downpour caused chaos across Delhi, flooding streets and creating major traffic jams. The city’s infrastructure struggled to manage the sudden deluge, leaving vehicles stranded and commuters facing significant delays. The weather forecast predicts continued moderate rainfall, worsening the already critical situation. The intense rain brought the city to a halt, with key roads submerged and traffic gridlocked.
