New Delhi: At least five individuals, including a 22-year-old woman and her child, perished, while two others sustained injuries in separate incidents following torrential rains that paralyzed the national capital and NCR, causing extensive traffic jams and leaving people stranded as streets turned into waterways.

In Delhi’s Ghazipur area, near Khoda Colony, a woman and her son tragically drowned in a flooded drain, while officials reported that three individuals were electrocuted near Gurugram’s IFFCO Chowk metro station around 10 pm on Wednesday. “Due to waterlogging, a tree fell and severed electric wires. Three people were fatally electrocuted in the water. The police have transported the bodies to the hospital,” they stated.

Delhi’s Education Minister Atishi declared late at night that all schools in the city would be closed on Thursday. “Considering the intense rainfall tonight and the prediction of more heavy rain tomorrow, all schools, both public and private, will be shut on August 1st,” she announced in a post on ‘X’.

Here are the latest updates on Delhi’s weather:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for Delhi on Wednesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain in the next 24 hours. “North Delhi, Central-Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, and NCR are likely to experience moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in the next two hours,” the IMD reported.

The weather department anticipates that intermittent rain will persist in parts of Delhi on Thursday, with rainy conditions expected to last until August 5. Lightning, thunder, and light rain have also been reported in other areas of the National Capital Region (NCR). The IMD forecasts that Delhi’s maximum temperature will likely stay between 33 to 35 degrees Celsius throughout the week, with minimum temperatures around 26 to 27 degrees Celsius.
