The Department of Agriculture’s Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources will host its annual Kids Fishing Derby on Sept. 7 behind the Hågat mayor’s office, according to a press release from the agency.
The derby is free and open to kids ages 6-17.
Participants may register at the DAWR office in Mangilao at 163 Dairy Road from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, until Sept. 6, the day before the derby.
Registration forms must be signed by parents/legal guardians and will be accepted along with supporting documents to verify proof of age of the participant such as a birth certificate, passport, military or Guam ID or other legal documentation.
Online registration via email will be accepted with completed documents. Registered participants must attend a mandatory fishing clinic and safety briefing to be held at 7 a.m. the day of the derby at the Hågat mayor’s office.
These events, stemming as far back as 1989, serve as an opportunity to encourage and enhance recreational fishing and aim to produce generations that truly take an interest in the preservation of the island’s resources, according to the release.
Jamie Bass, a longtime employee of the department, has had the pleasure of entering his two daughters and his son in the derbies throughout the years.
“It’s really a great experience to have my kids outdoors doing a fun activity together. These events have provided long-lasting memories for my family,” said Bass.

Registration is from Aug. 26 through Sept. 6 at the DAWR office, open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Those interested may also email leilani.duenas@doag.guam.gov.
