DoD to Conduct Nuclear Strike Simulation in Eastern Europe to Ready for Potential Agricultural Catastrophe

The U.S. Department of Defense is planning a nuclear strike simulation focused on the potential collapse of global agriculture, sparking concerns about changing military priorities in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is preparing a nuclear strike simulation designed to assess the potential impact of nuclear warfare on global agriculture, particularly in areas beyond Eastern Europe and Western Russia. According to a procurement notice posted on SAM.gov, the project aims to model the widespread destruction that nuclear conflict could have on food production systems worldwide, including the farms and infrastructure that sustain them.

The program will be conducted under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineer Research and Development Center, with the contract awarded to Colorado-based data modeling firm Terra Analytics. Their task will include optimizing a software suite that simulates the fallout of nuclear warfare, particularly how it would affect agricultural systems in former Eastern bloc countries. Aerial mapping and other technological methods will be used to analyze potential damage to food supplies in these regions.

The study also aims to explore the effects of radioactive materials on agriculture during a “non-destructive nuclear event,” indicating the project’s broader focus on understanding the resilience of food production systems under varying levels of nuclear exposure. The fact that the contractor must adapt the software to classified Department of Defense systems suggests that the project may be linked to national security concerns.

While the study could provide valuable insights into global food security during nuclear conflict, it raises questions about the timing and urgency of such a simulation. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is likely a key driver behind the initiative, as tensions between the West and Russia continue to escalate. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has hinted at the possibility of the U.S. lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons supplied by Western nations, potentially allowing them to target Russia directly. This shift in strategy could have profound consequences, with the DoD preparing for the fallout of such a dramatic escalation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already warned that any Western support for Ukraine in using long-range weapons inside Russia would constitute direct involvement in the conflict. In a recent statement, Putin promised an “appropriate” response if these weapons are used, though he did not specify the nature of the retaliation. However, earlier this year, Putin suggested that Russia could provide weapons to enemies of the West to strike at Western targets abroad.

Security experts, including Gerhard Mangott from the University of Innsbruck, have speculated that Russia may be preparing for a symbolic nuclear test to signal its readiness to use nuclear weapons. “The Russians could conduct a nuclear test,” Mangott stated. “They have made all the preparations needed. They could explode a tactical nuclear weapon somewhere in the east of the country just to demonstrate that they mean it.”

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, also issued a stern warning to NATO, stating that the alliance would become “a direct party to hostilities against a nuclear power” if it permits Ukraine to use long-range weapons against Russian targets. This further emphasizes the precarious nature of the ongoing conflict and the potential for it to spiral into a broader confrontation involving nuclear powers.

As the DoD presses ahead with its simulation of nuclear strike scenarios, it remains to be seen whether the project will serve primarily as a precautionary measure or if it signals a shift in military strategy, driven by the rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. The results of this simulation could offer vital insights into global food security during times of crisis, but they also underscore the growing concerns surrounding the use of nuclear weapons in the modern era.
