In Kushtia, Bangladesh, 34 villages across four unions in Daulatpur upazila have experienced flooding due to heavy rainfall and upstream water flow. The affected areas, lying adjacent to the Padma River, have seen significant damage to agricultural lands. Crops such as pulse, chili, banana, and other vegetables have been adversely affected.
Nurul Islam, the Daulatpur Upazila Agricultural Official, reported that vigna mungo, cultivated over 1,620 hectares, suffered damages amounting to Tk 23,33 crore. The total extent of damage to chili, banana, and vegetable crops, planted across 70, 73, and 13 hectares respectively, is still under assessment.
Despite the flooding, the Water Development Board noted that the Padma River at the Hardinge Bridge Point has risen by two centimeters in the past 21 hours, though it remains below the danger level. Executive Engineer Rezaul Karim of Pabna’s Water Development Board has indicated that the river’s water level is expected to stabilize without further increase.
The inundation has led to the closure of some primary schools and disrupted road connectivity in the region, particularly in Chilmari union. Local officials, including Chilmari UP Chairman Abdul Mannan and Ramkrishnapur UP Chairman Siraj Mandal, have highlighted the impact on villages and agriculture. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Waibdullah assured that preparations to manage the flood situation are underway, with efforts focused on maintaining communication with those affected.
