Guyanese President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali believes that a 3-year Youth in Agriculture programme being implemented by Grenada’s Government through the Ministry of Agriculture will help expose young people to the entire food production system.

“We want to congratulate Grenada on the tremendous work that you are doing in relation to, first of all, getting the youth excited about food production, as these facilities are not just about agriculture but about the entire food production system, being an important part in the logistics of operations of hotels, resorts, that surround here,” he said while visiting a site that houses one of 2 green/shade houses valued at US$12,000 donated to Grenada by Guyana earlier this year.

Under the quasi-cabinet structure of Caricom, Dr Ali has responsibility for food security for the region.

“Guyana is pleased to collaborate with you. I think that young people should be greatly exposed to this facility and that you should work with the regional financial institutions for agritech businesses,” he said to Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, Agriculture Minister Lennox Andrews and other Ministry of Agriculture officials who accompanied him to the Green House located at La Sagesse, St David.

The shade house at La Sagesse falls under the Youth in Agriculture Pilot Project which was launched in February 2023. Budgeted at EC$1.4 million, the project engages young people over a 3-year period providing working knowledge about agriculture as a structure for development and economic growth. The second green/shade house is fully functional at the Mirabeau Propagation Station. “I want to thank President Ali as the Head of Food Security in the region for the tremendous efforts and the passion that you’ve brought to the question of agriculture and food security in the region. This site is the perfect example for young people to see that food production is an exciting industry,” Prime Minister Mitchell said following the tour.

Prime Minister Mitchell, the current chair of Caricom, expressed his appreciation for Guyana’s technical assistance. “The facility is a wonderful opportunity for Grenada to diversify its food production by bringing in technology,” he said.

The tour was among several side events of the 47th Caricom Heads of Government Meeting, which concludes in Grenada on 30 July.
