H1 sees rises in group tourists and hotel occupancy

Macau has seen a surge in package tour visitors, with 968,000 recorded in the first half of 2024 – up 166 per cent year-on-year, the latest information from the Statistics and Census Service shows.

There was an increase not only in travellers from mainland China, but also from overseas, with the former up 143 per cent to 851,000 and the latter up 843.6 per cent to 102,000.

For South Korea and India, the figures were more than 14 and 20 times higher respectively.

As of mid-year, there were 143 providers of accommodation in Macau – an rise of 12 compared to a year earlier – providing 47,000 rooms – up 9.1 per cent.

The average occupancy rate for the first six months was also 84 percent, up 6.1 percentage points year-on-year.

A total of 7.277 million guests checked in during that period, an increase of 20.4 per cent from the same period last year.

It also marked a rise of 5.3 per cent compared to the same period in 2019.

Earlier this year, the Individual Visit Scheme had 10 new additions.

Qingdao in the eastern province of Shandong and Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, were added in March.

The remaining eight were added to the list in May, with the entries being Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province; Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia; Harbin in Heilongjiang province; Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

There were also Lanzhou in Gansu province; Xining in Qinghai province; Yinchuan, the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region; and Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Macau has risen to the top spot as the preferred destination for mainland Chinese travellers, a survey by the China Tourism Academy revealed in May.
