Labour’s migrant policy is up in the air

This month more than 200 failed ­asylum seekers and foreign criminals were flown to Brazil — the largest single deportation on record.

It was one of nine charter flights since Labour took power seven weeks ago that have returned people with no right to be in the UK to their home countries.

For Labour’s new team in the Home Office, it crystallised their change in approach since replacing the Tories, who had invested huge amounts of staff, energy and resources into the Rwanda deportation scheme, which Yvette Cooper cancelled after being appointed home secretary last month.

Instead of focusing on novel schemes such as Rwanda, she is dedicating the same resources in an attempt to make the most of existing procedures.
