The Lower Similkameen Indian Band has announced it has lifted the campfire ban on their territories.

The decision comes in conjunction with provincial agencies.

However, a ban will remain for burn barrels, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, and both Category 2 and 3 fires.

“With the current drought in the LSIB territories we must still maintain caution as the moisture dries out much faster than in normal conditions. We again must mitigate further fires and future damage with cautious, prudent, and ecologically backed wisdom,” reads a press release from the LSIB Chief, council and staff.

An off-roading ban will remain in effect.

“As a reminder, please keep to roads that are void of vegetation. They’re already established,” the announcement reads.

If any road users notice any signs of danger on any road, such as sloughing or material pooling, they are asked to avoid the area and call the LSIB as soon as possible. The LSIB can be reached at 250-499- 5528 or [email protected].

“As most backcountry users will note, there has been significant material movements as certain areas that don’t have their regular grass and bushes there to keep the lands together,” the announcement reads.

“As caretakers of the lands, we must stand with our people, our neighbours, and our partners, in making sure we are honouring our responsibilities to the lands & the tmixw (all living things) system.”
