The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Thane has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a group of men accused of assaulting a 72-year-old man on the Dhule-CSMT Express, after alleging he was carrying beef. Initial investigations revealed the man was actually carrying buffalo meat, which is not banned.

The incident took place on August 28 as the train was heading to Mumbai. The elderly man from Jalgaon was traveling alone to visit his daughter in Kalyan when he was confronted by the group over a seat dispute after departing from Nashik Road railway station and before reaching Igatpuri.

According to the GRP, the men physically assaulted the passenger, kicking and verbally abusing him. They recorded the assault on video, which later went viral on social media.

The attackers stopped the man from getting off at Kalyan station. He eventually managed to reach his daughter’s home in Kalyan after the group disembarked at Thane, The Indian Express reported.

Following the video’s viral spread, the railway police commissioner took immediate action, sending a team to locate the victim, who had initially not reported the incident. The police convinced him to file a complaint, leading to the FIR and the recording of his statement.

“Three suspects have been detained in Dhule and are being brought to Thane where they will be formally arrested after their roles in the incident are established. They will be produced in court tomorrow,” said Archana Dusane, senior inspector of Thane GRP.

It is suspected that the accused youths were traveling from Dhule to Mumbai-Thane for a police recruitment event. They have been charged under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including unlawful assembly (Section 189(2)), rioting (Section 191(2)), unlawful assembly in furtherance of a common objective (Section 190), wrongful restraint (Section 126(2)), causing hurt (Section 115(2)), mischief causing loss or damage (Section 324(4)(5)), criminal intimidation (Section 351(2)(3)), and intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace (Section 352).
