Mozambique sugar production projected to grow by 10 percent in 2024-25 agricultural season | Food Business Africa
MOZAMBIQUE – Mozambique’s sugar production is expected to increase from 1.6 million to 1.9 million tons in the current 2024-25 agricultural campaign, marking a 10 percent growth compared to the previous season.
Data from the agriculture sector in Xinavane district, Maputo province, indicate a steady recovery and growth trend for the sector, which had faced significant setbacks, including the devastating 2022 cyclone.
Despite the challenges, Mozambique’s sugar production maintained stability in domestic supply and prices, ensuring national self-sufficiency while allocating 15 percent of its output for export.
Over the past decade, Mozambique’s sugar production has averaged around 350,000 tons annually, with the country consuming only half of its total output.
The sector’s potential remains largely untapped, supported by the production of 2.7 million tons of sugarcane and the creation of 18,000 direct jobs nationwide.
However, the 2022 cyclone caused a sharp decline in sugarcane output, dropping from 2.7 million to 1.6 million tons.
Despite this setback, agricultural authorities managed to stabilize supply and prices, ensuring adequate domestic coverage.
Mozambique’s agricultural sector projects overall growth, with a 5 percent increase in cereal production, particularly corn, anticipated in the 2024-25 harvest. The aim is to surpass three million tons, contributing to the country’s food security.
Farmers in Mozambique are also benefitting from initiatives to enhance productivity. In June 2024, the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism, in partnership with the African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP), launched a US$2 million fertilizer financing project to support 300,000 smallholder farmers over three years.
The project aims to boost fertilizer access, improve soil health, and train farmers, with an additional US$877,980 grant dedicated to soil health activities.
