Youth organisations including the Youth Congress, DYFI and the Muslim League protested outside the branch office alleging that the Kerala Gramin Bank deducted EMIs from the relief money given to Wayanad landslide survivors. The protest also witnessed political foes uniting where the Youth Congress, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Muslim Youth League united in the protest.

“The bank on Sunday withdrew Rs 2,000 from the accounts of some landslide survivors. This amount was taken from the Rs 10,000 given by the Kerala government as immediate relief to those affected in Mundakkai, Chooralmala and surrounding areas”, said T Siddique, the Kalpatta MLA.

The Youth Congress party workers also accused the bank officials of coercing the survivors into renewing their gold loans.

Following complaints made by the survivors that the Chooralmala branch of Kerala Bank had debited EMIs from landslide survivors’ accounts, Wayanad District Collector Meghashree D R instructed the bank to refund the deducted money.

The Gramin bank’s decision to deduct EMI amount of Rs 2000 from the compensation amount goes against the assurances given by the State Level Bankers’ Committee and the state government that the pending instalments would not be deducted from the families’ accounts.

“It is when I received the relief amount that I realized that Rs 2000 was deducted from it. Then I was told that this was deducted as EMI by the Gramin bank. We never expected this deduction as we were promised by the government and bank officials that no money will have to be paid as EMI and they will look into it. We hope the government will take action on this”, said Kurien Mathew, a 55-year-old residing in Chooral Mala whose house has been fully destroyed.

Meanwhile CM Pinarayi Vijayan appealed all the banks to write-off the loans availed by the survivors of the wayamad landslides. CM Vijayan made the appeal at the state-level Bankers conference
