The off-Broadway musical Ramaavan-A Musical, produced by New Jersey-based Surati for Performing Arts, is scheduled to tour India at the invitation of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
The musical has a diverse American cast, and is directed by Rimli Roy. The group will be performing in 3 cities in India including Bengaluru in July and August.
The musical draws upon the epic Ramayana, and according to Surati, “captures the essence of the epic from a perspective never seen before on an international stage with a diverse cast,” a press release from the organization said.
“An evolving piece that showcases Indian classical dance and music alongside musical theater, opera, jazz and contemporary genres, Ramaavan is a living and breathing performance that captures the grand story’s beauty, diversity and message, capturing the imagination of everyone including its most ardent followers,” Surati said.
After a successful opening in New York’s off-Broadway and several shows in Jersey City, Surati’s interpretation of Ramaavan was invited by the ICCR, to perform in India , and the troupe will perform together with artists in India.
During this tour, Surati said it will begin scouting for “talented, underprivileged and special needs children in India to train and include them in their artistic endeavors and provide opportunities in the arts for them in the future in India as well as in the U.S.”
Surati’s Founder and Artistic Director, Rimli Roy, said, ”We are delighted that our work has been noticed by ICCR and we now get to take Ramaavan-A Musical to India while also laying the groundwork to work with underprivileged children.”
Musical theater actors from the US including Jeff Brackett, Jonathan Power, Andrew Leonforte, and Giselle Bellas will fly to India for this unprecedented cross-cultural collaboration.
“We have picked a highly talented team of multi-ethnic musical theater actors to fly with us to India and join the local talent there,” Roy added.
