Surat: Traffic movement on the highway and internal roads between the hill station Saputara and Nashik, and Kaprada to Nashik, has come to a halt due to a roadblock movement announced by local tribal groups in the bordering areas of Maharashtra.
The blockade started on Wednesday over various demands related to tribal rights.
The situation has caused severe inconvenience to passengers travelling from Gujarat to Shirdi, Trambakeshwar, and Nashik. The passenger buses and private cars are being sent back by police from Dang district. However, trucks are stranded on the road, waiting for the highway to reopen.
Meanwhile, police in Dang brought out a few passengers stuck in the traffic jam and sent them to their destinations in other vehicles. “We received information about some bus passengers being stuck for hours. These included children and women. Our team, with the help of Maharashtra police, brought them walking up to some distance,” said S.G. Patil, deputy superintendent of police, Dang.
Later, the passengers were brought to Saputara in a vehicle and then sent to their homes in Gujarat or Maharashtra. “The passengers of buses and cars were brought into Gujarat and then sent in another vehicle. While the vehicle that is trapped in the jam is safe with their driver,” said police.
Police in Dang and neighbouring areas were alerted by their Maharashtra counterparts about plans of the local groups to call for a road blockade. Hence, the police started making preparations.
Till Thursday, police tried to clear bus or private vehicle passengers trapped in the jam through smaller roads. However, as the protesting groups came to know, they started blocking the internal roads as well.
