New Delhi: Just a week after the completion of the 33rd Summer Olympics Games in Paris, the bidding for the 2036 edition will be an intense race. India has already opened up its ambitions to bid for the quadrennial showpiece event.

On July 22 this year, the Sports Ministry informed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) that it has initiated the dialogue with the Future Host Commission (FHC). This is the Informal Exchange stage, which means India is one of the contenders to host the Olympics 12 years later.

Nusantara (Indonesia) and Istanbul (Turkiye) have already confirmed their bids with the likes of Saudi Arabia and Qatar expected to throw their hats.

With the competition expected to be fierce for the hosting rights, French President Emmanuel Macron has reckoned that India is capable to host an event of the Olympics’ stature but also pointed out at the competition the South Asian country will face from other countries.

“First of all, I am a strong believer in your country and the future of your country and what you can build and your capacity to organise such events,” Macron told Jio Cinema.

“I think this is a fierce competition first. You should not underestimate the fact that…… competing by itself is a great preparation. Second, we did work and we are working together with India,” he added.

How Paris became host for 2024 Olympics?

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) elected Paris to host the 2024 Summer Games on September 2017 at the 131st IOC session in Lima, Peru. The vision of the French capital was to minimise the cost and make it an sustainable event with the consideration of environmental impact through their facilities under the urban landscape.

After the likes of Boston, Budapest, Hamburg and Rome withdrew as potential hosts, the race was between Paris and Los Angeles. As per an ESPN report, the Los Angeles committee made a deal with the IOC to host the 2028 Summer Games.

“I do remember seven years ago when I went to Lausanne, we did compete with the US at that time (Los Angeles), and we found that agreement. At the end, it is still a great cooperation,” Macron recalls.
