The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast informed that a fresh low-pressure area is expected to develop over the southwest Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, potentially bringing a new spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of southern India.
According to meteorological forecasts, southern coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala are likely to experience intense rainfall from Nov 11 to 14. “A fresh spell of Heavy to very heavy rainfall activity likely over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala during 11th -14th November 2024,” IMD said in a statement.
The Met Office also highlighted that till November 12, light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning, is expected to occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema may also experience isolated heavy rainfall from November 11 to 13.
Meanwhile, dense fog is expected to prevail in the morning hours over Himachal Pradesh on November 9 and 10. “Minimum temperature is likely to gradually fall by 2-4℃ over Western Himalayan Region during next 5 days. No large change in Minimum temperature over remaining parts of the country during the week,” IMD added.
Delhi AQI continues to remain ‘very poor’
The air quality in Delhi showed slight improvement on Saturday morning, but it still remained in the ‘Very Poor’ category, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at 7 am. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 361, down from 380 at 4 pm the previous day.
Several areas across Delhi, including Bawana, recorded alarmingly high AQI levels, with Bawana at 409, Alipur at 387, Anand Vihar at 393, Dwarka Sector 8 at 362, IGI Airport at 344, Dilsad Garden at 220, ITO at 359, Mundka at 377, Najafgarh at 379, New Moti Bagh at 411, Patparganj at 389, RK Puram at 376, and Wazirpur at 399, according to SAFAR data. Akshardham, a major tourist attraction and key route connecting Delhi to important parts of Uttar Pradesh, recorded an AQI of 393, with air quality classified as ‘very poor’ by the CPCB.
IMD issues orange alert for 3 districts in Kerala
Southern Kerala experienced intense rainfall on Friday, prompting IMD to issue an orange alert for three districts—Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta. The orange alert signals very heavy rain, with expected rainfall between 6 cm to 20 cm.
In addition, a yellow alert was issued for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts, where heavy rainfall (6 to 11 cm) is expected. The IMD has also advised against fishing activities along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast due to strong winds and adverse weather conditions.
Extreme weather events claim over 3,200 lives, says report
A new report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) reveals that extreme weather events in India caused significant loss of life and property in the first nine months of 2024. The report indicates that these events occurred on 93% of the days, with over 3,200 fatalities, the destruction of over 235,000 houses, and the loss of millions of hectares of crops.
The extreme weather also claimed the lives of nearly 9,500 animals. Compared to the same period in 2023, the country witnessed a sharp increase in the frequency and severity of such events, highlighting the growing impact of climate change on India’s population and infrastructure.
