New Delhi: India kicked-off their Paris Olympics 2024 campaign in the best possible manner as the women’s and men’s archery team earned a direct entry into the quarterfinals of the event. While it was the women’s archery team first who sealed a top-four spot, the men’s archery unit followed their footsteps in the evening by earning the same distinction with a third-place finish.

The men’s category was led by archer Dhiraj Bommadevara who put up an incredible show to finish on the fourth spot with 681 points in his kitty. Fellow archers Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav also did their best as the former finished on 14th with 674 points while the latter was placed at the 39th spot with 658 points at finish.

Bommadevara proved out to be the best among the three as he experienced a roller-coaster ride at the ranking round especially in the first half but made a strong comeback in the second to complete dominate and seal the show.

Who is Dhiraj Bommadevara?

For debutant Dhiraj Bommadevara, who presented himself at his maiden Olympics, a better start would not have been expected. The highly skilled Indian archer, who was born in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, began his archery journey at the tender age of just 5 years. At just 5, his father admitted him to the Volga Archery academy in the city where he started his training and went on to train there till he attained the age of 15.

After 10 years of training in Vijayawada, he moved to the Army Sport Institute in 2016 for advanced training in the sport. An year later in 2017, he made his international debut and in just four years, clinched a gold medal in the team event at the World Archery Youth Championships in 2021. While he kept on earning many tiny accolades in the next few years, his major breakthrough came at the 2023 Asian Games where he, along with other two Indian archers won the silver medal in the men’s recurve team event.

Dhiraj has achieved notable success in international competitions, including winning bronze medals at the World Cup in Antalya and the World Cup Stage 3 in Medellin. In just seven years of his international career, Dhiraj has earned 4 gold medals, 10 silver and 3 bronze medals.
