Imtiaz Jaleel, the Maharashtra chief of AIMIM, has expressed the party’s intention to join forces with the India Alliance to challenge the BJP, although they have not yet received a favorable response. This step prompts speculation about AIMIM’s motivations, particularly given the party’s history of maintaining an equal distance from both the Congress and the BJP.

AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, is now seeking to join forces with the Opposition, particularly in Maharashtra.

New Delhi: After a disappointing loss in the Lok Sabha elections outside Hyderabad, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) appears to be altering its political stance. The party, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, is now seeking to join forces with the Opposition, particularly in Maharashtra.

AIMIM’s Maharashtra chief, Imtiaz Jaleel, expressed the party’s desire to collaborate with the India Alliance to counter the BJP, despite receiving no positive response thus far. The move raises questions about AIMIM’s motivations, given its historical equidistance from both the Congress and the BJP.

1. AIMIM faces challenges in Maharashtra

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Owaisi’s party secured one seat, and in the assembly elections, it won two seats. Additionally, AIMIM came in second in five constituencies during the assembly elections. The party’s candidates put up a strong fight in Dhule, Nashik, and Aurangabad. However, the party’s performance declined in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In Aurangabad, where the party had won in 2019, the candidate faced a defeat by 134,000 votes. Anticipating similar results in the upcoming assembly elections, the party is now seeking to form an alliance before the elections.

2. Brake on expansion of AIMIM after 2020

After performing well in Maharashtra in 2019 and Bihar in 2020, Asaduddin Owaisi started expanding the party across the country. He first tried in Bengal, but Mamata spoiled his game there. Owaisi also suffered a setback in UP. Owaisi also tried to revive his party in states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, but he did not succeed here either.

The main reason for Owaisi’s efforts not being successful is the voting pattern of Muslims. Owaisi primarily engages in Muslim-centric politics, but recent elections have shown that Muslims are increasingly voting for parties capable of defeating the BJP in their states. As a result, Owaisi’s party, AIMIM, has struggled to gain traction, leading to a halt in its expansion outside Hyderabad.

3.76 per cent of Muslims voted for INDIA bloc

According to CSDS, in the recent Lok Sabha elections, 76 percent of Muslim voters supported the INDIA Alliance, marking a record high. In states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Assam, parties traditionally aligned with Muslim interests faced significant losses due to the rise of the INDIA bloc. For instance, Badruddin Ajmal, a prominent Muslim leader and multiple-term Lok Sabha MP from Assam, was defeated in the Dhubri seat by a margin of over 10 lakh votes.
